FINALS: Powerade Tigers 1 - 3 Talk N Text Tropang Texters

“I’m just happy to be alive.”

This was what Talk ‘N Text center Ali Peek said in the exclusive interview with News5 on Thursday, three days after he was shot by a still-unidentified gunman in the parking lot of the RFM Sports Center in Mandaluyong City.

The 36-year old Peek spoke to the media for the first time about the incident. He talked about the bullet that still remains lodged in his neck, saying that he and his family has not yet decided whether to go through the risky surgery to remove the slug.

“We want to get the right decision and go from there,” said Peek.

Doctors at the Medical City said that surgery could endanger the cager’s life, which is why his family is mulling seeking a second opinion before making a decision.

On Monday night, Peek was shot after his plyometric workout at the RFM facility. The police released a composite sketch of the suspect on Tuesday, but Peek said he didn’t see the assailant.

“That’s the thing, I didn’t see the guy. I didn’t see his face,” he said.

Police earlier said they are looking at a possible revenge angle, even though Peek said he was still very ‘confused’ why the incident happened.

Mandaluyong police has set up a task force to investigate the Peek case. Talk ‘N Text team owner Manuel V. Pangilinan has put up a P500,000 reward for information that would lead to the arrest of the suspect.

Peek thanked his teammates and Talk ‘N Text management for support. After the Tropang Texters’ game on Wednesday, the PBA veteran wrote on his Twitter account from the hospital congratulating the team and asking for prayers for Ryan Reyes, who came down with an injury during the match

But while he still remains connected to the team, returning to the court is now the least of Peek’s priorities.

“I don’t want to discuss that. The important thing right now is the safety of my family and myself,” he said.

His mother Marlene, who planed in from the United States on Wednesday, expressed her grief over her son’s plight.

“Ali doesn’t deserve this because he is a good man,” she said.
