Mick Pennisi and Dylan Ababou checked their personal slumps and Barako Bull got back on track, topping Rain or Shine, 106-102, in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Sunday night.

Pennisi and Ababou combined for six-of-10 three-point shooting and a total of 43 points as Barako played with a newfound energy and confidence to snap a three-game losing skein.

“Losing our last three games after four straight wins was tough for the team. It’s so good we got over the hump,” sighed Barako coach Junel Baculi.

“Nonetheless, we’re still in danger. We have to stay focus and get over what’s troubling us. We’ll treat out last three games as already part of the playoffs,” Baculi added.

Fighting with a gutsy determination, the Energy avenged an 81-93 loss to the Elasto Painters in their previous tiff and moved up to solo sixth at 6-5, only half game behind the Elasto Painters and the Meralco Bolts at 7-5.

The Elasto Painters are now tottering in the middle of the chart, having lost their last four games. Baculi lauded the sterling efforts put up by Pennisi and Ababou.

“They were big factors in this game,” said Baculi of the two who anchored the team’s decisive breakaway in the second half.

Pennisi knocked in four triples and wound up with a total of 22 points – his biggest output in four seasons.

Ababou added two treys and a total of 21 points, after making ony two in the last two games. Baculi stressed though that they have to be consistent if the Energy were to get a good position in the playoffs.

Willie Miller, Danny Seigle and Don Allado added double-digit outputs. Ababou and Miller provided the push in the third quarter enabling Barako to establish control going to the payoff period.

Pennisi, Allado and Lou Gatumbato joined the fray in the fourth and the Energy led by as many as 18 before tapering off at the finish.

The Elasto Painters waged a last-ditch effort to salvage the game but Pennisi himself bailed his team out of danger with clutch free throws. (SB)
