Mark Caguioa teamed up with Willy Wilson for the winning play in the closing seconds as Barangay Ginebra edged Petron Blaze, 91-89, to formalize its entry into the PBA Philippine Cup playoffs at the Smart Araneta Coliseum Friday.

“We wanted set screens for Mark (Caguioa) but he was smart enough to find an open teammate (Wilson),” said Ginebra coach Siot Tanquingcen.

A defensive breakdown by the Boosters left Wilson open to make the winning basket with 5.5 ticks left to play.

Caguioa was supposed to take the shot but opted to dish as he spotted Wilson by his lonesome underneath the basket.

The Kings then put up a good defense to complete the stirring victory that guaranteed their entry into the quarterfinals.

The Powerade Tigers, at 5-8, and the Alaska Milk Aces, at 3-9, were left to dispute the last quarters slot. “We’re not yet out of the woods.

We’re in a crucial stretch where we can be good or stay there in a precarious situation,” said Tanquingcen.

With three games left in the elims, the Kings’ immediate goal is to at least make the Top Six to avoid facing a quarterfinalist enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage.

Caguioa and Ronald Tubid combined for 38 points coming off the bench as the Kings sustained their romp and caught up with the Barako Bull Energy at sixth place at 6-5, just half-game behind the fifth running Rain or Shine Elasto Painters (7-5).

Ginebra stretched its streak to seven games while stopping Petron’s own hot surge at six. The Boosters, however, remained in strong contention for a twice-to-beat incentive with a 9-4 card.

After Wilson made the go-ahead basket, Petron coach Ato Agustin immediately sued for time and mapped a play for Alex Cabagnot.

The Boosters, however, weren’t able to execute with Danny Ildefonso missing a low-percentage shot at the buzzer. Cabagnot, earlier, pumped in a booming trey that tied the count at 89-all with 27.1 ticks left. (SB)
