Barangay Ginebra scored a shaky 88-83 win over Barako Bull to secure a spot in the best-of-three quarterfinal round of the 2011 PBA Philippine Cup Thursday night at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Missed free throws by Mike Cortez and Willy Wilson in the closing seconds gave the Kings a scare, but the Energy could not complete the comeback and were relegated to the No. 7 spot after finishing their elimination round with a 7-7 slate.

It was Ginebra’s fourth straight win to improve their mark to 8-5 and will face defending champion Talk ‘N Text on Sunday in the final day of the eliminations.

The Kings could end up No. 3, 4 or 5 depending on the results of the game of Rain or Shine (8-5) against the ousted Alaska.

“At least we got the first step. We were able to avoid playing teams in the top two,” said Ginebra head coach Siot Tanquingcen.

“Now, we just have to keep playing hard and let’s see saan kami dalhin. Mahirap mamili baka bumalik sa amin,” he added.

The Kings will face either Elasto Painters or Meralco in the next round.

Cortez led his team with 17 points, 15 came in the three-point zone, while Mark Caguioa added 16. Rob Labagala netted a career-high 14 markers for Ginebra.

Willie Miller paced Barako Bull with 18 points while Leo Najorda chipped in 14, 12 in the huge third-quarter onslaught by the Energy.

Trailing 32-47, Najorda and Don Allado joined forces in leading their team in the third period where they outscored the Kings, 35-20 to tie the game at 67-all entering the fourth.

Barako Bull was able to grab the lead on Danny Seigle’s basket, 69-67, but Ronald Tubid sparked a 10-0 blast to reclaim the advantage, 77-69 with 7:38 remaining.

The Energy threatened at 77-82 on Seigle’s one-hand slam but Nino Canaleta hit back-to-back baskets and Caguiao converted two free throws for an 88-79 cushion, 30.2 ticks left.

Barako Bull was able to close the gap at 83-88 after Cortez and Wilson went a combined 0-of-4 in the 15-foot line and Miller had the chance to put his team closer but missed a triple.
