FINALS: Powerade Tigers 1 - 3 Talk N Text Tropang Texters
Meralco hopes for a tough defensive stand when it collides with B-MEG in the opener of the 2011 PBA Philippine Cup Friday at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City.

The Bolts and the Llamados battle at 5:15 p.m., followed by the interesting tussle between Rain or Shine and Barako Bull at 7:30 p.m.

As proven in their five wins, Meralco head coach Ryan Gregorio said their best defensive effort is needed against a talented team like B-MEG.

“We are still aiming for consistency. We win close games but there are games that we lose by blowout,” said Gregorio as his team is currently tied with Petron Blaze for fourth spot with 5-3 mark.

“The objective for tomorrow’s game is to battle B-MEG defensively because we don’t have the same offensive arsenal like they do. In the games that we’ve won, we limited our opponents to an average of less than 80. But in the games that we dropped, it ballooned to 108,” he added.

“So it is imperative that our defense must be present.”

After absorbing a 44-point loss to the Elasto Painters, the Bolts bounced back with a huge 93-87 victory over Barangay Ginebra to stay in the upper half of the standings.

“Our goal is to maintain our position in the upper half of the leader board. A victory will solidify our position,” said Gregorio.

The Llamados of coach Tim Cone are holding a 3-4 slate and are tied with the Kings. They are also coming off a 76-65 win against winless

In the main tiff, Rain or Shine eyes the solo lead with a victory over the Energy, who are running third with a 5-2 mark.

The Elasto Painters are locked in a tie for the top spot with defending champion Talk ‘N Text at 6-1 and a win will put them on top of the team standings.

“Our one-week break gives us time to prepare against Barako Bull,” said head coach Yeng Guiao, whose wards have notched wins in each of their last four games.

The Energy of coach Junel Baculi are also coming off a win, defeating Powerade, 117-78. But Baculi knows the Elasto Painters will be tough to beat.

“Rain or Shine is on a roll. Our defense has to step up especially on their shooters,” said Baculi.
