Petron Blaze got a huge lift from an unexpected source when the Boosters blew Shopinas.com away with a record-setting production in the third quarter.

Rob Reyes, a 6-foot-6 back-up center who rarely makes an impact in a game, was in his best element in the third quarter Wednesday night, helping the Boosters dispatch the Clickers, 102-77, for their second straight win in the PBA Philippine Cup at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Reyes, who averaged just 1.8 points in the conference, finished the game with seven points and had a career-high four blocks he all collected in the telling quarter.

“We did a good job, particularly on defense in the third quarter,” offered Petro Blaze coach Ato Agustin, who took notice of Reyes’ effort.

After enduring repeated rallies by the Clickers in the first half, the Boosters ripped the game apart in the third by opening the period with 21 straight points.

It was a 23-0 run including the last basket of the second quarter. The streak went down as the third longest unanswered run in the history of the league.

The longest run of 32 straight points is held by Barangay Ginebra, which set the feat in Game 5 of the 1991 First Conference Finals against Shell. Overall, Petron improved to 5-3 (win-loss) record to tie idle Meralco at fourth and fifth spots. Arwind Santos collected 18 points and had 11 rebounds for his sixth double-double effort.

Joseph Yeo and Alex Cabagnot each had 16 points and combined for 11 assists for the Boosters, who netted 35 points on 22 Shopinas.com turnovers.

Petron Blaze threatened to separate from their rivals early when it built several double-digit leads in the first half.

“When we built a 13-point lead in the first quarter the guys started to relax and that allowed Shopinas to come back,” Agustin explained.

“We can’t do that to a hardworking team like Shopinas. I’m pleased the guys got their focus back in the second half.” The Clickers, who stumbled to their eight consecutive defeat, had their last stand late in the second quarter when RJ Jazul knocked in successive 3-pointers that led to a 12-0 run that pulled them within 43-46 at halftime.

Renren Ritual showed the way for the Clickers, scoring 11 of his team-high 17 points in the fourth quarter when the game had already been decided. Jazul scored 16 points and James Sena added 13 for the Clickers, who managed just nine points on 4 of 20 shooting in the third period.

During that fateful third, the Clickers missed the first 11 shots and turned the ball over seven times. (DBC)
