Except for a little breakdown late in the second period, Petron Blaze played perfectly on both ends of the court and smashed Shopinas.com, 102-77, for its second straight win in the 2011-12 PBA Philippine Cup Wednesday at the SMART Araneta Coliseum.

The Boosters used a mind-boggling 23-0 run in the third period to break away from what had been a tight game after the Clickers made their run toward the end of the first half and trail only by 3, 43-36, going into the break.

Joseph Yeo engineered the third quarter blast, while Arwind Santos highlighted the run with a one-hand throw-down as Petron handed Shopinas its 8th straight loss in as many games.

Santos fired 18 points on 8-of-14 shooting from the field and added 11 rebounds to lead the Boosters, who improved their win-loss mark to 5-3.

Yeo and Alex Cabagnot added 16 points apiece while Rey Guevarra and Denok Miranda each had 12 for Petron.

“First quarter was good. We were up by 13 then we relaxed. Ayaw talaga namin ‘yun. After the first half, I reminded the players to stick to the game plan,” said Boosters head coach Ato Agustin.

“At the start of third, we did a good job especially on defense and they didn’t score for seven minutes. Our goal talaga is to limit them below 80 points because in our first three wins, we won because of our defense.”

Petron was comfortably ahead at 44-31 when Shopinas unloaded its own 12-2 burst to trim the gap to 43-46 at halftime.

But the Clickers failed to score in the first seven minutes of the third quarter, allowing the Boosters to post a 67-43 lead with 5:27 remaining in the period.

James Sena ended the Clickers’ scoring drought with a jumper, but Petron responded with another 7-0 run for a commanding 74-45 spread.

Renren Ritualo led Shopinas with 17 points while RJ Jazul added 16. Sena chipped in 13 points for coach Franz Pumaren, who was Agustin’s teammate in the 1989 San Miguel Beer Grand Slam team.

Also part of that squad were Pumaren’s assistant Tonichi Yturri and Petron team manager Hector Calma.

Petron’s 23-0 burst was the third largest scoring run in the league, after Alaska’s 26-0 against Talk ‘N Text in 2008-09 Philippine Cup and Ginebra’s 32-0 assault against Shell in game 5 of the 1991 First Conference finals.

The scores:

PETRON 102 – Santos 18, Yeo 16, Cabagnot 16, Guevarra 12, Miranda 12 Reyes 7, Sharma 6, Doruelo 5, Agustin 4, Baclao 4, Ildefonso 2.
