Powerade got the win it needed in preparation for a tough assignment in the quarterfinals as it toppled Barako Bull, 99-95, to end its elimination round campaign with a 6-8 mark in the 2011-12 PBA Philippine Cup Tuesday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Already tasked to face one of the top two teams in the quarterfinals, the Tigers showed that they knew how to win in the tight game as they came up with clutch plays in the endgame.

The loss was damaging for the Energy, whose win-loss record dropped to 6-7. To avoid a twice-to-beat disadvantage in the quarterfinals, Barako Bull now needs to win its final assignment against Barangay Ginebra (7-5), and hope that the Gin Kings lose their last game to at least have a chance at a better placing through better quotient.

Barako Bull and the Kings will collide on Thursday.

“Most of our wins were almost blowouts and the five losses we had could have won down the wire,” said Powerade head coach Bo Perasol who drew 20 points, four rebounds and four assists from rookie Marcio Lassiter.

“If we can’t win down the wire, how can we win in the playoffs? This ballgame is test for us.”

The Tigers could end up No. 8 or No. 7 depending on the result of the Energy game. Either way, they need to win twice against their opponent to advance into the next round.

After leading by as much as ten points, 77-67, Powerade was threatened by Barako Bull, with Mick Pennisi’s three-pointer shoving the Energy within two points, 89-87, with 2:33 remaining.

The Tigers scored the next 6 points for a 95-87 cushion, but Barako Bull was not done yet as it unloaded a quick 6-0 burst to close the gap to 95-93 with 19.6 seconds remaining.

Sean Anthony, however, had a key rebound and hit two free throws in the final 4.8 seconds to seal the win for the Tigers.

Anthony and Casio contributed 17 and 15 points, respectively.

Willie Miller had 19 points for Barako Bull and became the latest member of the 500 steals club. Veteran forward Danny Seigle chipped in 17 points for the Energy.
