Talk 'N Text begins its bid to earn a piece of PBA history when it takes on rival Petron in Game One of their best-of-seven semifinals series in the 37th Philippine Cup at the Astrodome.

The Tropang Texters seek to become the first team in the last 26 years to repeat as All-Filipino champions. But the act is easier said than done.

Although the defending champions Text already practiced in full force during the three-week holiday break—including Ali Peek and Ranidel De Ocampo—coach Chot Reyes said the Texters’ health issue remains his major concern.

Excerpted from “Passing Glory,” a profile of B-MEG Llamados coach Tim Cone for the December 2011 issue of Esquire Philippines, on sale now

ON THE SIDES OF TIM CONE’S FACE are sharp, dark ridges that turn deep into the sockets of his eyes. He looks like he hasn’t had much sleep; his new team, the B-MEG Llamados, had lost three of its first four games in the new season of Philippine Basketball Association. But then it’s hard to imagine Cone getting much sleep over the past 22 years, a period in which he coached – and won – more PBA games than anybody else in league history.

JAKARTA—The much-anticipated meeting between SMART-Gilas Pilipinas coach Rajko Toroman and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas president Manuel V. Pangilinan has been reset to January next year.

Toroman confirmed this in a text message to InterAKTV.

“I am still in Serbia. They rescheduled my trip to Manila for January,” wrote Toroman.

The veteran international coach was supposed to meet Pangilinan on November 15 to discuss plans on the future of the SMART-Gilas program.

Toroman, who led Iran to its first FIBA Asia crown and its first Olympic basketball stint, refused to give details about his new function with the next batch of SMART-Gilas, a squad referred to as Gilas-2. “I will talk by January, after my meeting with MVP,” said Toroman. “I can’t speak about my options now.”

MANILA, Philippines — Rain or Shine mentor Yeng Guiao was fined for the first time this season by the PBA Commissioner’s Office, for shoving a Shopinas.com player in a previous game that led to his early ejection.

Guiao, however, will be available when the Elasto Painters face the Barako Bull Energy in the PBA Philippine Cup today at the Astrodome in Pasay City.

PBA Commissioner Angelico “Chito” penalized Guiao P4,600 after accumulating his fifth technical foul this conference, so far the most for any coach, as well as P30,000 for “physically contacting a player that is flagrant misconduct” when he shoved the Clickers’ Ogie Menor.
