Alaska needed a couple of defensive stops to repulse the stubborn Shopinas five, 86-80, for its first back-to-back wins in the 2011 PBA Philippine Cup Sunday at the SMART-Araneta Coliseum.

Sonny Thoss and Jay-R Reyes had key blocks in the final stretch as the Aces weathered the uprising of the Clickers, who absorbed their 11th straight loss in as many games.

Thoss had 15 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 blocks in an all-around performance while Reyes also had a sterling game with 13 markers, 17 boards and 4 blocks as Alaska tied Powerade for 8th spot with 3-7 slate.

Cyrus Baguio and Bonbon Custodio netted 12 and 10 points respectively for the Aces.

“Give credit to the players. We were able to capitalize on mismatches,” said head coach Joel Banal.

“The guys played big in the end. Sonny (Thoss) gave them problems in the post. Bonbon and Eric (Salamat) helped us with our fastbreak attacks,” Banal added.

The loss negated the career-high of RJ Jazul, who netted 24 points. Jojo Duncil also had an all-around game for Shopinas with 13 points, 6 rebounds and 8 assists.

And again, the Clickers still lacked the composure in the endgame, as they couldn’t make the shots in crucial time of the game.

After trailing by 15, 60-75, Jazul and Duncil joined forces for a 20-7 spurt to close the gap at 80-82 with 2:43 remaining.

Custodio turned the ball over in the next play but Reyes swatted James Sena’s attempt and Thoss had a crucial putback off LA Tenorio’s missed jumper to give Alaska some breathing space at 84-80, 54.3 seconds left.

Shopinas head coach Franz Pumaren sued for a timeout and designed a play for Jazul who was wide open at deep left corner but misfired and Tenorio sealed the win with two free throws.

The Clickers are now lingering at the cellar at 0-11 and matched the third all-time longest losing streak of Welcoat (now Rain or Shine) in the 2008-09 Philippine Cup.

Great Taste (1982 Reinforced Conference) and Countryfair (1984 All-Filipino) are still tied with the longest losing streak in PBA history with 13 each.

And Shopinas could break that infamous record, as the Clickers’ next three assignments are against tough teams like Powerade, Rain or Shine and B-MEG.

The scores:

ALASKA 86 – Thoss 15, Reyes 13, Baguio 12, Custodio 10, Dela Cruz 9, Baracael 8, Tenorio 8, Salamat 4, Bugia 4, Eman 3.
