TALK N Text came back from a nine-day break brimming with energy and pounced on Barangay Ginebra, 86-71 to remain in the hunt for first place in the 2011-12 PBA Philippine Cup.

The Tropang Texters, who notched their third straight victory and improved to 5-1, are now just a win behind pacesetter Rain Or Shine (6-1).

Talk N Text outscored Barangay Ginebra, 25-14 in the breakaway second quarter to vault ahead by 17 points, 48-31 at the half. Starring for the Tropang Texters in that period were backcourtmen Jayson Castro who pumped in nine points and Ryan Reyes who had back-to-back three point shots.

Talk N Text continued its juggernaut in the third quarter as it established a huge 23 point advantage, 64-41 on a triple by Kelly Williams, 4:34 remaining in the period.

The Tropang Texters were up, 69-52 entering the fourth. But Barangay Ginebra wasn’t done yet and tried to muster a comeback in the final quarter.

Ronald Tubid and Mike Cortez rifled in triples while Enrico Villanueva added a free throw in a 7-0 assault that brought the Gin Kings to within ten points, 69-59, 9:40 remaining.

But after Jared Dillinger and John Wilson exchanged two free throws, Talk N Text pulled away for good with Reyes and Williams buckling back to work anew.

Reyes even completed a rare four-point play off a foul by Villanueva at the height of a 12-2 blast that gave the Tropang Texters an 81-63 spread, 5:31 left.

“This is our way of paying tribute to our brothers at Philex Mining,” said TNT coach Vincent “Chot” Reyes saying that they spent time bonding with miners in Baguio during the nine-day break.

“They are part of the family, too. They do a tough job working 600 feet to a thousand feet below.” Reyes led the Tropang Texters with 20 points, four rebounds, six assists and two steals.

Williams completed a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards aside from two assists and a steal.

Mark Caguioa led the Gin Kings with 14 points while Cortez had 11 as only these two players finished in double figures in scoring. Barangay Ginebra dropped to 3-4.(BP)
